Dear Editor,
I would like to respond to the article in your June edition entitled "A
Betrothal Proposal" by Michael G. Lawler and Gail S. Risch.
The teaching of the Catholic Church about fornication is clear and unambiguous: it is always objectively a serious sin (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church #1755, #1852, #2353). Couples who live together without marriage do in fact live in sin objectively.
Because the position of the authors is contrary to Church teaching about the intrinsic evil of fornication, I have disassociated the Omaha Archdiocese from the Center for Marriage and Family at Creighton University.
Neither Lawler nor Risch are reliable teachers of Catholic moral theology, and certainly are not spokespeople for the Church regarding human sexuality and
sacramental marriage.

Archbishop Curtiss on Fornication
Archbishop Curtiss (Archdiocese of Omaha, NE) has never been one to shy away from speaking the truth, sometimes rather bluntly. Here is a recent letter (via Is My Phylactery Showing?) wherin he lays down the smack on cohabitation and fornication:

Thanks be to God for Archbishop Elden Francis Curtiss's clear, concise, immediate condemnation of the heretical nonsense Dr. Michael Lawlor has been teaching, and now dares to flaunt in a national magazine.
Years ago Dr. Lawlor (in my hearing) was publicly trashing the Church's stand on transsubstantiation saying we should have gone with transsignification, the Lutheran position.
THEOLOGICAL PROFESSORIAL "MALPRACTICE" and "ABUSE OF STUDENTS' CONSCIENCES" should be sufficient grounds enough for firing even a tenured theology professor. CU has no excuse for having kept him on staff all these years. This is not a "freedom of conscience" or an "academic freedom" issue. It is about whether someone can deliberately DEFRAUD consumers, the parents and students who scrimp to attend a "Catholic University" only to have their children's faith cleverly undermined by such "Professors"
I am always amazed, with everything else going on in the world, that the catholic church continues to pound its doctrine of sexual repression.
The article is not "horrible." Its an honest attempt to use Catholic moral tradition to address a contemporary problem. It falls short but is an honest attempt nonetheless.
To disassociate oneself from school or even the two authors based on this article alone is rather sad.
The Church's moral teachings have evolved over time (i.e. charging interest on a loan is no longer forbidden) and will continue to develop over the upcoming centuries. Stopping honest and intelligent people from attempting to help the Church meet contemporary needs is the worst thing a bishop could do.
Yes, thanks be to God for Archbishop Elden Curtiss. I agree with the first commenter.
The Church isn't here to placate the culture of death. She's here to be a beacon of Light, preaching the Truth in Love, and never waivering.
The Truth DOES NOT CHANGE, or it's not truth. Sadly, relativism is sweeping through the Church and she's always being attacked, but it's always worse when from within.
How Our Lady must weep!

Recent convert to the Catholic Church and Catholic because God's morality works. The "wisdom/morality" of the world is puny, faulty, and deadly.
That the Catholic Church should expect to sound credible with its primitive and abusive idea of "sex is sin and damnation if you do not do it the way I say it" is a mystery.
I suggest Catholic grow out of their ethics of shepherd tribes of thousands of years ago and start approaching humanity, and sexuality, in a more respectful and scientifically objective way.
Right, let's get with. To cohabit indefinitely with a woman is so much more respectful than to marry her. To wait for marriage is an insult. Is that teddy bear stuffing between your ears?
